Where to Build your Chicken Coop
Where to build your chicken coop is largely determined by the position of your sun. Generally, you should place your coop facing the sun. This allows the warm sun to penetrate into the hen house during winter. Deciduous trees allow the sun in during winter but also offer cooling shade during the hot summer months.
This orientation also provides common western and eastern winds that freely flow during summer but stops cold winds getting in during winter.
For convenience, position your coop close to your house. You will need to collect eggs, clean the coop and interact with your hens daily. Your feed storage, water and electrical sources need to also be close. Basically, place your coop not too close to your house that you get bothered by the noise and odor. In addition, it should also be as far as possible from your neighbors to prevent complaints.
It is your responsibility to confirm with your local government authority for any permits you need to make sure keeping backyard chickens is in compliance with local laws.
